Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo

Discover the history of this unique 14th century monastery

Guided visit to the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo

The hero of Tarifa, Don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, founded the monastery in 1301 with the purpose of serving as a family pantheon. Don Alonso, known for the famous deed of the siege of Tarifa, who replied to the besiegers that “if they demanded his surrender on pain of killing a son taken prisoner, he would rather they kill that son and five others if he had them, than give them the villa of the king his lord”. The Guzmán was a powerful lineage, that of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia.

The first community to be established in the monastery was of the Cistercian order, and in the 14th century the Gothic churches were built with an absolutely military appearance, in the first of which we find the 14th century recumbent sculptures of Juan and his wife, while the parallel church, ordered to be built by Guzmán el Bueno, has an extraordinary altarpiece by Martínez Montañés.

In 1431 the Hieronymites replaced the Cistercians, who were expelled, and the Mudejar cloisters, the cloisters of the Dead and the Evangelists, were completed. Later the sacristy, the chapter house, other chapels and the 17th century tower completed the whole complex.

The “Isidros”, as the monks of the monastery were known, carried out a great intellectual work during the 16th century until they came up against the Inquisition. The community was completely purged and many of its members were able to flee, among them Fray Casiodoro de Reina, author of the first complete translation of the Bible into Spanish, the “Biblia del Oso”.
