Guided visit to the Basilica of La Macarena

The guided visit to the Basilica de la Macarena takes place in the district of the same name, one of the most popular in the city of Seville, and being the first Sevillian temple to hold the dignity of Minor Basilica by a bull of 12 November 1966 granted by Pope Paul VI.

The construction of the church began in 1941 and was completed in 1949, the year in which it was blessed by Cardinal Pedro Segura y Sáenz. It should be remembered that previously the Macarena brotherhood had worshipped its sacred statues in the parish church of San Gil, which was burnt down during the Civil War in 1936.

The brotherhood entrusted the work to the architect Aurelio Gómez Millán, one of the continuers of the so-called Andalusian or Sevillian regionalist style, the interior being neo-baroque in style.

Inside, one of the city’s most popular “Dolorosas” is venerated, the Esperanza Macarena, a “candelero” image attributed to Luisa Roldán, la Roldana, daughter of the sculptor Pedro Roldán and the only woman to become a sculptor at the Spanish court in the 17th century. Also Baroque is the other titular image of the brotherhood, Ntro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia, the work of the sculptor Morales Nieto.

The highlight of Holy Week in Seville is the departure of this brotherhood on the day of its penitential procession to the holy and metropolitan Cathedral of Seville on Friday at dawn.

As well as visiting the Basilica of La Macarena, we can also admire the only remains of a continuous stretch of wall in the city, 400 metres of wall, which runs from the Macarena arch to the church of San Hermenegildo, next to the old gate of Cordoba.

The guided tour lasts approximately one and a half hours.

Discover Seville with a Private Guide

My aim is that you get to know my city in a pleasant and friendly way. All my guided tours are adapted to each visitor, taking into account their personal tastes. Seville offers a lot, a wide cultural heritage, a rich gastronomy or vibrant traditions. That’s why showing this city, not only requires knowledge but also knowing how to connect and move the public, and this is given by the experience of more than 25 years that I have been an official local guide in Seville. In Sevilla Walks you will find different types of tours always adapted to the public to which they are finally addressed.
